<title>Background</title>
<p>Increased competition in the higher education sector has intensified pressure on institutions, particularly in attracting student enrolments, funding and academic talent. As the number of institutions grows, marketers are seeking more effective ways to reach their audience. Institutions are therefore increasingly making use of social media marketing to gain a competitive advantage over other entities. As polytechnics compete for the same student enrolments, these institutions need to utilise social media marketing to build brand awareness effectively and gain a competitive advantage against rival institutions.</p>

<title>Introduction</title>
<p>The increased competition across various sectors has impacted the sustainability of organisations, particularly education institutions (Snadrou &#x0026; Haoucha <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0093">2024</xref>). As the number of institutions worldwide continues to grow, competition for student enrolments in higher education (HE) also intensifies (Hart &#x0026; Rodgers <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0039">2024</xref>; Hassan &#x0026; Shamsudin <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0040">2019</xref>). The latter resulted in an increase in marketing activities by higher education institutions (HEIs), specifically digital marketing activities, such as social media, in an attempt to attract students (Ramadhan &#x0026; Gunarto <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0082">2021</xref>). Subsequently, adopting social media marketing and other digital marketing activities has become essential for organisations striving to remain competitive, making them an integral part of their overall marketing strategy (Barus <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0012">2023</xref>).</p>
<p>The use of digital marketing has allowed marketers to effectively reach younger audiences who increasingly use digital devices (Szymkowiak et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0097">2021</xref>). Despite tarnished public perceptions of polytechnics and intense competition in the higher education sector, polytechnics do not invest significant effort in marketing through digital channels, such as social media, to increase institutional awareness (Omar et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0071">2020</xref>), but rather rely on traditional media, which is deemed less effective (Camilleri <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0019">2019</xref>). As a result, polytechnics must increasingly implement social media marketing and other digital marketing strategies to attract new students.</p>
<p>Authors agree (Govindan, Isa &#x0026; Parkash <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0035">2020</xref>; Maresova, Hruska &#x0026; Kuca <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0059">2020</xref>) that in the digital era, social media marketing has become an essential promotional tool that creates opportunities for HEIs to engage with students, create awareness and disseminate relevant information about their products and services. By making use of social media activities, stakeholders, including students, gain exposure to various offerings through diverse promotional activities conducted across multiple social networking platforms (Raza et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0085">2020</xref>). Therefore, social media marketing has become a key source of brand awareness among various stakeholders (Febrian et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0026">2022</xref>).</p>
<p>In acknowledging the latter, social media marketing and brand awareness have been measured in different contexts, including tourism (Pastini &#x0026; Lilasari <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0075">2023</xref>; Rimadias, Alvionita &#x0026; Amelia <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0087">2021</xref>), construction (Malesev &#x0026; Cherry <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0058">2021</xref>), small and medium enterprises (Aljumah, Nuseir &#x0026; El Refae <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0006">2023</xref>; Rukuni, Maziriri &#x0026; Mofoka <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0088">2020</xref>), higher education (Marhareita, Kila &#x0026; Mandagi <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0060">2022</xref>; Wiryany, Poedjadi &#x0026; Rahmawati <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0106">2023</xref>) and banking (Alnsour &#x0026; Tayeh <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0007">2019</xref>; Hafez <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0038">2021</xref>). Studies focusing specifically on the use of digital marketing and social media in the polytechnic context (Ademiluyi <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0004">2019</xref>; Bhebe, Van Eyk &#x0026; Potgieter <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0015">2025</xref>; Gede et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0031">2022</xref>; Susanti, Sukasih &#x0026; Astawa <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0095">2024</xref>) acknowledged that digital marketing channels such as social media, specifically Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and TikTok, are significant communication tools that enhance brand visibility, shape students&#x2019; perceptions and influence their acquisition and mastery of skills in polytechnics. However, these studies did not establish the influence of social media marketing, as a unidimensional construct, on brand awareness, as a multidimensional construct. In HE, specifically the polytechnic context, there is a lack of research that establishes explicitly the influence of social media marketing on brand awareness, focusing on top-of-mind, brand recall and brand recognition. Therefore, the study seeks to establish the influence of social media marketing activities on brand awareness and its sub-factors in Zimbabwean polytechnics. In seeking to achieve the stated aim, the following objectives will be considered: (1) create a conceptual understanding of social media marketing and brand awareness and brand awareness sub-factors in the context of Zimbabwean polytechnics, (2) empirically test the influence of social media marketing and brand awareness and its sub-factors in the Zimbabwean polytechnics using a customised research instrument, (3) propose a model to enhance brand awareness within the Zimbabwean polytechnic context.</p>

<title>Literature review</title>
<p>This section discusses social media marketing and the proposed social media activities used to establish their influence on brand awareness and brand awareness sub-factors. The section further discusses brand awareness and its three sub-factors.</p>
<sec id="s20003">
<title>Social media marketing</title>
<p>Considering the definition of social media marketing put forward by Sanz-Blas, Buzova and Miguel-Romero (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0089">2019</xref>) as an activity that fosters networking and facilitates communication among social media users, one has to recognise the evolution in the field of marketing. Progressing from a static approach in the 1950s (Hien et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0042">2020</xref>) to a more dynamic paradigm in the 1990s and 2000s (Krishen et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0048">2021</xref>), this evolution has empowered organisations to leverage online platforms for the purpose of increasing brand awareness (Ramadhani &#x0026; Mulyowayudi <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0083">2020</xref>). Furthermore, it must be recognised that social media marketing has contributed to technological progress by enabling consumers to actively share information among themselves and with organisations (Saydan &#x0026; Dulek <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0090">2019</xref>). Acknowledging this, marketers now view social media as an essential and vital part of their marketing strategies, aiming to effectively engage with their customer base (Li, Larimo &#x0026; Leonidou <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0052">2023</xref>) and are utilising various social media platforms to promote their products and services to both existing and potential customers (Iastremska et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0043">2023</xref>).</p>
<p>Recognising that consumers actively use social media to exchange information about brands (Lamola <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0051">2019</xref>), businesses capitalise on these platforms as cost-effective marketing tools, particularly in resource-constrained environments where campaigns can be launched using minimal resources (Bonilla et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0017">2020</xref>). Additionally, social media is an alternative communication tool that enhances relationships through customer engagement (Fraccastoro, Gabrielsson &#x0026; Pullins <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0030">2021</xref>), and has transformed the marketing landscape, providing significant benefits, including increased customer brand awareness (Jeswani <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0044">2023</xref>).</p>
<p>In education, social media has proven to be an effective means of informing and attracting both current and prospective students. This has led higher education institutions (HEIs) to increasingly employ social media for communication and outreach, using their presence on these platforms to share information with audiences at the national, regional and global levels (Adegbuyi et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0003">2024</xref>). As in other sectors, HEIs and organisations are leveraging online marketing platforms to boost brand awareness (Barus <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0012">2023</xref>; Momen, Sultana &#x0026; Haque <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0067">2020</xref>). Consequently, social media has become a catalyst for significant change, playing a crucial role in the recruitment and marketing efforts of HEIs (Mehmood et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0065">2021</xref>). Several studies confirm the significant influence of social marketing activities. such as interactivity, content sharing, advocacy and brand awareness (Dedeo&#x011F;lu et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0022">2020</xref>; Febriyantoro <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0027">2020</xref>; Luwie &#x0026; Pasaribu <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0054">2021</xref>; Zeqiri et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0110">2024</xref>).</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s20004">
<title>Interactivity</title>
<p>Interactivity refers to the extent to which social media consumers share information with the organisation and other consumers (Cheung et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0021">2020</xref>). The emergence of interactive social media has facilitated marketers to communicate with numerous current and potential consumers (Appel et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0009">2020</xref>). With the evolution of marketing and its related functions, marketing communications are no longer monologues but have developed into interactive exchanges with consumers and stakeholders (Mulyana, Briandana &#x0026; Rekarti <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0068">2020</xref>). Such interactivity presents consumers with opportunities to acquire relational knowledge about the brand (Cheung et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0021">2020</xref>), and enables organisations to convey positive brand images (Ebrahim <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0024">2020</xref>), which facilitates the creation of brand awareness of the advertised brand (Febriyantoro <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0027">2020</xref>). Consequently, organisations must deliver timely, reliable, and relevant information that encourages consumers to engage with the brand and with each other (Aydin, Uray &#x0026; Silahtaroglu <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0010">2021</xref>).</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s20005">
<title>Sharing of content</title>
<p>In the current information age, social media has become an important platform for consumers to share content (Qin <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0079">2020</xref>). Consumers are increasingly turning to social media to share user-generated content about products and services offered by organisations (Tuncer &#x0026; Kartal <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0104">2024</xref>). Conversely, organisations utilise social media marketing to deliver content to consumers, making social media a vital source of information that aids organisations in decision-making (Khanom <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0046">2023</xref>). Social media allows potential and current consumers to access information instantly and act upon it immediately (Tajvidi et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0098">2020</xref>). Therefore, social media marketing is viewed as an informative activity that enhances brand awareness since it provides customers with up-to-date content about the organisation&#x2019;s products and services (Febrian et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0026">2022</xref>).</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s20006">
<title>Advocacy</title>
<p>Consumers increasingly rely on peer reviews and comments on social media when making purchasing decisions, as they perceive these platforms as trustworthy sources of brand information (Chen et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0020">2022</xref>). This reliance enhances social media&#x2019;s appeal to marketers by fostering customer advocacy, enabling satisfied consumers to share positive feedback and generate viral effects (Jeswani <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0044">2023</xref>). Social media thus serves as a powerful communication platform, allowing consumers to express their satisfaction or dissatisfaction with brands and share their opinions and recommendations (Majeed et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0056">2022</xref>). However, it is of concern that customers are able to write reviews on social media, which organisations do not control (Wong et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0107">2021</xref>). Notwithstanding the latter concern, social media transforms consumers into brand ambassadors who actively create and disseminate content about products and services (Nkegbe &#x0026; Abor <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0070">2023</xref>).</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s20007">
<title>Credibility</title>
<p>As customers cannot experience products and services directly online, credibility is an essential factor for consumers (Filieri et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0028">2021</xref>). Consumers increasingly seek information on social media (Mason, Narcum &#x0026; Mason <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0062">2021</xref>), and they often regard such information as a trustworthy source, especially among the younger demographic (Zhang &#x0026; Li <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0111">2020</xref>). Opinions from family and friends are often prioritised over information from traditional institutions and advertisements (Gildin <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0033">2022</xref>). Nonetheless, concerns about the trustworthiness of social media content remain high (Meel &#x0026; Vishwakarma <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0064">2020</xref>), mainly because these platforms facilitate rapid dissemination of both accurate information and misinformation (Brindha, Jayaseelan &#x0026; Kadeswaran <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0018">2020</xref>). The perceived credibility of information usually depends on its origin, as people tend to trust information more when they recognise and are familiar with the source (Flanagin, Winter &#x0026; Metzger <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0029">2020</xref>). Interestingly, Oppong (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0072">2020</xref>) noted that higher levels of credibility are also associated with increased brand awareness. The latter supports the finding of Nguyen and Nguyen (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0069">2020</xref>) that there is a positive relationship between credibility and brand awareness, as accurate information sources provided by organisations enhance brand awareness among consumers.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s20008">
<title>Brand awareness</title>
<p>Brand awareness is established within brand equity, which can be defined from financial and customer-based perspectives (Tasci <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0100">2021</xref>). Aaker (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0001">1991</xref>) developed a multidimensional component-based model with five main dimensions of brand equity consisting of brand loyalty, brand awareness, perceived quality, brand associations and other proprietary assets. According to Aaker (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0001">1991</xref>), brand loyalty reflects how likely a customer is to switch to another brand, especially when that brand changes, either in price or product features. Perceived quality, which is believed to be a major component of brand equity, refers to the customer perception of the total quality or the brand&#x2019;s superiority in its performance when compared with other products or services (Beig &#x0026; Nika <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0013">2019</xref>). Additionally, brand associations can be defined as the knowledge or images of the brand in the customer&#x2019;s mind (Beig &#x0026; Nika <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0013">2019</xref>) and they contain the meaning of the brand for consumers and may be favourable or unfavourable (Surucu et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0094">2019</xref>). Proprietary assets are mostly excluded from studies that focus on the direct customer relationship (Tasci <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0100">2021</xref>). Brand awareness on the other hand, refers to the consumer&#x2019;s level of awareness and knowledge of a particular product or brand (Tedry &#x0026; Ellitan <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0102">2023</xref>). Brand awareness is created through repeated, memorable exposure to brand elements such as a name or slogan (Liang et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0053">2024</xref>). This supports the views of Padhy and Sawlikar (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0074">2018</xref>), who proposed that the brand messages should be memorable and different from other messages, presenting a reason to be noticed (Padhy &#x0026; Sawlikar <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0074">2018</xref>). The HE sector faces rising competition for students and top scholars because of global student mobility trends and government initiatives promoting recruitment (Teixeira et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0103">2022</xref>). To improve market visibility and increase market share, HEIS are building strong brands, leveraging digital media to promote their identity consistently and effectively (Scott &#x0026; Mhunpiew <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0091">2021</xref>). Consequently, HEIs must strengthen brand awareness to gain a competitive edge (Boinett, Kibet &#x0026; Jemaiyo <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0016">2022</xref>). Aaker (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0001">1991</xref>) argued that when thinking of a brand, there are different levels of brand awareness, namely unawareness of the brand, brand recognition, brand recall and top-of-mind awareness. However, in this study, brand unawareness was not incorporated into the hypothetical model.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s20009">
<title>Top-of-mind</title>
<p>Top-of-mind is the highest level of brand awareness, referring to the brand first mentioned by consumers (Hadi, Rini &#x0026; Sembiring <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0037">2020</xref>). Wijaya et al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0105">2020</xref>) add that when faced with numerous options, consumers need not consider other brands, even when those brands feature appealing images. A product with strong top-of-mind awareness will likely achieve a larger market share (Dewi, Edyanto &#x0026; Siagian <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0023">2020</xref>). Hence, it is essential to enhance brand awareness to gain a competitive advantage (Marolt, Zimmermann &#x0026; Pucihar <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0061">2022</xref>).</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s20010">
<title>Brand recall</title>
<p>Maganti (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0055">2020</xref>) defines brand recall (the second-highest level of brand awareness) as the ability of customers to immediately recall the brand from memory, based on product category. Brand recall is unaided (Priscilla, Hidayat &#x0026; Supriadi <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0078">2022</xref>) and is based on a person being requested to mention a particular brand in a product class (Gesmundo et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0032">2022</xref>). At this level, consumers can recall the brand without any prompts and can thus mention a brand name within a product category when asked (Rehman et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0086">2023</xref>). According to Maganti (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0055">2020</xref>), the number of recalled brands is influenced by both individual and product factors, including brand loyalty, awareness, set size and education level. Aaker (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0001">1991</xref>) suggests that organisations build brand recall through continuous repetition. Therefore, marketers should utilise appropriate digital marketing platforms, such as social media, to help potential consumers recall brands, enabling them to consider the brands that come to mind first (Hidayat et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0041">2021</xref>).</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s20011">
<title>Brand recognition</title>
<p>Brand recognition can be defined as the customer&#x2019;s ability to recognise the brand through the assistance of a cue or hint that is exposed to them (Hadi et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0037">2020</xref>). Oyenuga, Ahungwa and Onoja (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0073">2021</xref>) note that for a customer to recognise a brand, they must have previously seen or heard something related to it. Consumers usually recognise brands when exposed to visuals such as logos, colours and brand names (Wijaya et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0105">2020</xref>). At the recognition stage, consumers are familiar with the brand but require prompts to remember it (Bergkvist &#x0026; Taylor <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0014">2022</xref>). Thus, brand recognition represents a basic level of brand awareness, where recognition can be triggered again through reminders (Hadi et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0037">2020</xref>). Mazaraki et al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0063">2021</xref>) propose that marketers should use easy-to-spell and pronounce names for their brands that are known, memorable, expressive, yet unique and distinct so that they are easily recognised and recalled by consumers. Since the digital environment offers many stimuli that can influence brand recognition, organisations need to make their brands more appealing than competitors&#x2019; brands to increase market share and profitability (Piranda, Sinaga &#x0026; Putri <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0076">2022</xref>). As a result, organisations, including HEIs, can achieve brand recognition by repeatedly exposing their institutions&#x2019; messages and images through digital marketing initiatives such as online advertising and social media.</p>
<p>Based on the preceding discussion, the following hypotheses are put forward:</p>
<disp-quote>
<p>H1: A significant relationship exists between social marketing activities and brand awareness.</p>
<p>H2: A significant relationship exists between social media marketing activities and top-of-mind awareness.</p>
<p>H3: A significant relationship exists between social media marketing activities and brand recall.</p>
<p>H4: A significant relationship exists between social media marketing activities and brand recognition.</p>
</disp-quote>
<p>Based on the reviewed literature, a hypothesised model was proposed for this study.</p>

<title>Methods</title>
<p>A quantitative research approach was adopted for the study. According to Rahi (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0080">2017</xref>), the quantitative research approach emphasises collecting current data and does not consider the feelings of individuals, their emotions or the context of the environment. Furthermore, the quantitative research approach adopts formal measuring tools for data collection, and the data are collected. This approach emphasises collecting current data and does not consider individuals&#x2019; feelings or the context of the environment. Furthermore, it collects data systematically and objectively (Kumatongo &#x0026; Muzata <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0050">2021</xref>).</p>
<p>The study also utilised the descriptive research design. Descriptive research is mainly used to analyse data that uses descriptive statistics, thereby obtaining an accurate and complete description of situations (Greener &#x0026; Martelli <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0036">2018</xref>; Kosie &#x0026; Lew-Williams <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0047">2022</xref>). Data were collected through an email survey, whereby a web-based self-administered questionnaire was distributed to the three common divisions with assistance from the Information Technology Departments of the two polytechnics. The questionnaire consisted of three sections. Section A made use of nominal scales to gather demographic data from respondents, while Section B consisted of scaled items to measure the influence of social media marketing activities. Section C used scaled items to measure brand awareness, focusing on the three brand awareness levels. <xref ref-type="table" rid="T0001">Table 1</xref> presents the sources of scale items.</p>

<p>The items used in the questionnaire to measure social media marketing activities and brand awareness were employed from the work of Alsamydai and Khasawneh (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0008">2013</xref>), Seo and Park (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0092">2018</xref>) and Rukuni et al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0088">2020</xref>). Two items in the questionnaire were self-generated. Items used to measure brand awareness sub-factors were employed from the work of Aaker (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0002">1996</xref>), Girard and Pinar (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0034">2020</xref>), Makgosa and Molefhi (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0057">2012</xref>) and Yoo et al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0109">2000</xref>). These variables, namely social media marketing activities and brand awareness and its sub-factors, were measured using the five-point Likert scale that ranged from &#x2018;strongly disagree&#x2019; (1) to &#x2018;strongly agree&#x2019; (5).</p>
<p>The validity of the questionnaire was assessed using Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), followed by reliability testing through the Cronbach&#x2019;s alpha coefficient. The study utilised convenience sampling targeting polytechnic students from the two institutions in Midlands province in Zimbabwe. The students were from the three divisions. The Midlands province is centrally located; hence, the two institutions are easily accessible to most prospective students in the country. The two institutions, viewed as representative of the Zimbabwean population, recruit both genders, recruit large numbers for both the January and May intakes, and they are currently using digital marketing activities to market their institutions. Convenience sampling was deemed appropriate for the study since it allowed for quick, cost-effective access to the student population that had college internet access and polytechnic email accounts. Since convenience sampling is prone to sampling bias, the researchers mitigated potential bias by exposing the questionnaire to all the students through their college accounts and included a clear eligibility criterion and screening questions that ensured only students from the three divisions completed the questionnaire. An online questionnaire was administered, and 492 usable questionnaires were collected.</p>

<p>As per <xref ref-type="table" rid="T0007">Table 7</xref>, a regression analysis was conducted to ascertain whether social media marketing is a significant predictor of brand awareness sub-factors (top-of-mind, brand recall and brand recognition). Based on the regression results, social media marketing had a relationship that is statistically significant (&#x03B2; = 0.329, p = 0.000) with brand awareness. Thus, hypothesis H1 relating to social media marketing activities and brand awareness was accepted. The results are consistent with the study by Eid, Abdelmoety and Agag (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0025">2020</xref>); Kamal et al. <title>Conclusion</title>
<p>This study examined the influence of social media marketing activities on brand awareness and its sub-factors within the Zimbabwean polytechnic context. The findings demonstrated that the five key factors (social media marketing activities, top-of-mind awareness, brand recall, brand recognition and overall brand awareness) produced a well-fitting model, confirming the validity of the measuring instrument. Additionally, all factors exhibited Cronbach&#x2019;s alpha values above 0.70, indicating strong reliability. The relatively high mean scores further suggest that respondents generally agreed with social media marketing activities and brand awareness measures.</p>
<p>Statistical analyses revealed significant relationships between social media marketing activities and all dimensions of brand awareness. Pearson correlation and regression analysis showed a strong correlation between social media marketing activities and overall brand awareness, with a significant relationship. A similarly strong correlation was found with top-of-mind awareness. At the same time, brand recall and brand recognition exhibited moderate but significant correlations. Notably, top-of-mind awareness emerged as the strongest influencer of social media marketing activities.</p>
<p>This study contributes to academic literature and practical marketing strategy by deepening the understanding of how social media marketing activities influence brand awareness in the polytechnic sector. The findings provide valuable insights for polytechnic marketers, enabling them to develop targeted strategies that enhance brand visibility and engagement through social media. For instance, brand awareness specifically top-of-mind awareness, brand recall and brand recognition of polytechnics can be enhanced through social media strategies such as Facebook and TikTok. Additionally, the proposed model offers a foundation for future research on leveraging social media marketing for brand-building in educational institutions.</p>
<sec id="s20022">
<title>Scholarly implications</title>
<p>Reviewed literature indicated that currently, there is no study that has been conducted specifically focusing on the context of Zimbabwean polytechnics, specifically analysing the influence of social media marketing on brand awareness and its sub-factors. Furthermore, no study has treated social media marketing as a unidimensional construct and brand awareness as a multidimensional construct in the Zimbabwean polytechnic context in empirically evaluating the influence of social media marketing on brand awareness and its sub-factors. Therefore, the study contributed to the literature on social media marketing and brand awareness, specifically considering the brand awareness sub-factors in the Zimbabwean polytechnic context. The study developed a research instrument that measured the respondents&#x2019; perceptions of social media marketing and brand awareness and the sub-factors in Zimbabwean polytechnics. The respondents&#x2019; perceptions would assist polytechnic marketers in enhancing brand awareness through social media marketing in an effort to achieve a competitive advantage over other institutions of higher learning. Furthermore, this instrument can also be adapted for other HEIs. The study also proposed a model that can be utilised as a premise for furthering research in polytechnic marketing.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s20023">
<title>Managerial implications</title>
<p>As noted earlier, the study sought to determine the influence of social media efforts on brand awareness and the sub-factors within Zimbabwean polytechnics. Findings from the study demonstrated a significant connection between social media marketing initiatives and brand awareness, including the sub-factors, in the Zimbabwean polytechnic context. Consequently, the study offers the following managerial implications.</p>
<p>Firstly, social media marketing is a marketing activity that uses social networks to enhance brand awareness for organisations. Reviewed literature has also presented social media marketing as a digital marketing activity that enhances brand awareness (Eid et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0025">2020</xref>). Additionally, social media informs and attracts students; hence, tertiary institutions are increasingly adopting social media to effectively communicate with current students and to attract prospective students (Milian &#x0026; Gurrisi <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0066">2017</xref>). As a result, polytechnic marketers should leverage social media marketing strategies such as Facebook and TikTok to improve brand visibility and secure a competitive edge against rival educational institutions.</p>
<p>Secondly, social media marketing is an information activity that provides up-to-date product and service information to customers (Tariq, Khan &#x0026; Araci <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0099">2020</xref>). The information activity enables customers to share personal experiences and to engage with organisations. Social media marketing can influence brand awareness as customers can receive important and relevant information as they interact among themselves and organisations through various social media channels (Kumar &#x0026; Nanda <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0049">2019</xref>). The study indicates that almost three-quarters of the respondents believed that the polytechnics&#x2019; social media pages are an essential source of polytechnic information. Therefore, polytechnic marketers should share current information such as programme highlights, campus events and student spotlights on social media, as social media serves as a vital resource for polytechnic-related information for students.</p>
<p>Thirdly, top-of-mind awareness, brand recall and brand recognition are brand awareness sub-factors that have a major role in measuring brand awareness. Additionally, the mean score results suggest that the respondents had high brand recognition, brand recall and top of mind awareness in the Zimbabwean polytechnic context. As such, polytechnic marketers should focus on improving top-of-mind awareness, brand recall and brand recognition among polytechnic students by utilising social media marketing. Polytechnics could, for example, consider using Facebook and TikTok to improve top-of-mind awareness, brand recall and brand recognition among polytechnic students.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s20024">
<title>Limitations and recommendations for future study</title>
<p>The research indicates that social media marketing strategies, such as Facebook and TikTok, improve brand awareness and its sub-factors within the context of Zimbabwean polytechnics. It is likely that additional social media marketing strategies exist that could also influence brand awareness and the related factors in the Zimbabwean polytechnic environment. Future studies could be conducted to explore other social media marketing strategies and assess their effect on brand awareness, with an emphasis on brand awareness sub-factors in Zimbabwean polytechnics.</p>
