<sec id="st1">
<title>Background</title>
<p>State-owned logistics enterprises often struggle to convert resource advantages and digital transformation initiatives into superior performance. Prior research links strategic agility to business model innovation (BMI) and firm performance (FP), but less is known about when agility becomes more performance-relevant in regulated and bureaucratic settings.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="st2">
<title>Aim</title>
<p>This study examines whether BMI mediates the relationship between strategic agility and FP and whether absorptive capacity strengthens the relationship between strategic agility and BMI.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="st3">
<title>Setting</title>
<p>The study focuses on Indonesian state-owned logistics enterprises.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="st4">
<title>Method</title>
<p>A quantitative approach was employed using survey data from managerial-level respondents (<italic>n</italic> = 427). Partial least squares structural equation modelling was employed to analyse the proposed relationships.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="st5">
<title>Results</title>
<p>Strategic agility was positively associated with BMI and FP, and BMI partially mediated the relationship between agility and performance. Absorptive capacity significantly strengthened the association between strategic agility and BMI although the moderation effect was small. These findings indicate that agility is more strongly linked to business model renewal when firms possess stronger knowledge-processing capability.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="st6">
<title>Conclusion</title>
<p>Strategic agility is not a self-sufficient performance mechanism. Its performance relevance depends on whether agile responses are translated into BMI and supported by absorptive capacity.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="st7">
<title>Contribution</title>
<p>This study extends dynamic capability theory by positioning BMI as a value-conversion mechanism and absorptive capacity as an internal boundary condition in state-owned logistics enterprises.</p>

<title>Introduction</title>
<p>The rapid expansion of the digital economy has reshaped competition across industries by increasing the speed, scale and data intensity of business transactions. This transformation is particularly important for the logistics sector because e-commerce growth depends on distribution systems that are fast, reliable, digitally visible and responsive to fluctuating customer demand (Dovbischuk <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0026">2021</xref>; Kuteyi &#x0026; Winkler <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0040">2022</xref>; Verhoef et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0075">2021</xref>). In Indonesia, the value of e-commerce transactions reached Indonesian rupiah (IDR) 1288.93 trillion and involved approximately 4.40 million digital business units, representing a 15.30&#x0025; increase over the previous year (Badan Pusat Statistik <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0010">2025</xref>). These developments indicate that digital commerce is not merely a market opportunity but also a structural pressure on logistics providers to redesign how they create, deliver and capture value. Within this changing environment, a persistent performance disparity has emerged between private logistics companies and state-owned logistics enterprises. Private logistics providers have shown stronger market responsiveness and have gained a dominant position in shipment volume, consumer preference and national logistics market share (Frontier <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0028">2024</xref>; Momentum Works <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0051">2022</xref>; Rafli <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0057">2024</xref>). In contrast, Indonesian state-owned logistics enterprises have pursued business transformation and digitalisation initiatives, yet these efforts have not always been followed by proportional improvements in financial and operational performance. Although market share increased during 2020&#x2013;2022, revenues from the core courier and logistics segments declined thereafter (Purnama <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0056">2022</xref>). This condition is theoretically important because state-owned logistics firms often possess extensive networks, organisational maturity and resource endowments, but these structural advantages may not automatically translate into superior performance under bureaucratic procedures, regulatory control, public service obligations and limited managerial autonomy (Astami et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0009">2010</xref>; Jahja et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0033">2020</xref>; Jakob <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0034">2017</xref>). This paradox can be understood through dynamic capability theory, which explains how firms sustain competitiveness by sensing environmental changes, seizing emerging opportunities, and reconfiguring resources in response to turbulent conditions (Teece <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0068">2007</xref>; Teece, Pisano &#x0026; Shuen <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0070">1997</xref>). Strategic agility represents an important dynamic capability because it enables firms to anticipate environmental change, respond quickly and realign strategic priorities under uncertainty (Doz &#x0026; Kosonen <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0027">2010</xref>; Tallon &#x0026; Pinsonneault <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0067">2011</xref>). Prior studies generally show that strategic agility is positively associated with innovation, adaptability and firm performance (FP) in dynamic environments (Kale, Aknar &#x0026; Ba&#x015F;ar <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0036">2019</xref>; Tufan &#x0026; Mert <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0072">2023</xref>). However, the performance implications of strategic agility should not be treated as automatic. Agile responses may become fragmented, reactive or weakly coordinated when rapid adaptation is not supported by coherent resource reconfiguration and knowledge integration (Cohen &#x0026; Levinthal <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0022">1990</xref>; Teece <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0068">2007</xref>; Zahra &#x0026; George <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0081">2002</xref>). This issue is especially relevant in state-owned enterprises (SOEs), where bureaucratic routines, policy burdens and limited managerial autonomy may constrain strategic action (Arif &#x0026; Sule <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0007">2019</xref>; Jakob <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0034">2017</xref>). Business model innovation (BMI) provides one mechanism through which strategic agility may become associated with FP. Business model innovation refers to the renewal of value creation, value delivery and value capture mechanisms (Teece <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0069">2010</xref>; Zott &#x0026; Amit <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0083">2010</xref>). From a dynamic capability perspective, strategic agility reflects sensing and seizing, while BMI reflects reconfiguration through changes in value propositions, service delivery systems, customer interfaces, activity structures and revenue mechanisms (Clauss <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0020">2016</xref>; Teece <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0069">2010</xref>). In the logistics sector, such renewal may include digital service platforms, last-mile delivery models, e-commerce logistics partnerships, customer-oriented service packages and more adaptive revenue mechanisms (Clauss et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0021">2021</xref>; Dovbischuk <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0026">2021</xref>; Kuteyi &#x0026; Winkler <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0040">2022</xref>; Verhoef et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0075">2021</xref>). Without BMI, strategic agility may remain limited to rapid operational adjustments that do not alter the firm&#x2019;s underlying value logic. Therefore, this study positions BMI as a mediating mechanism linking strategic agility with FP. The literature review provides a basis for examining the connection between strategic agility, BMI and FP. For example, the study by Clauss et al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0021">2021</xref>) showed that a positive correlation exists between strategic agility and BMI, while BMI serves as the mediating variable between strategic agility and FP. Additionally, Clauss et al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0021">2021</xref>) found that the environmental turbulence strengthens the relationship between strategic agility and BMI. Yet, Clauss et al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0021">2021</xref>) focused on the German electronics industry. This leaves an important theoretical gap regarding whether the same agility&#x2013;BMI&#x2013;performance mechanism operates in state-owned logistics enterprises, where strategic responsiveness is shaped by bureaucratic procedures, public service obligations, regulatory control and limited managerial autonomy. Moreover, environmental turbulence explains external pressure for business model renewal, but it does not fully explain whether firms possess the internal knowledge-processing capability required to convert agile responses into substantive BMI. Absorptive capacity provides a theoretically relevant internal boundary condition for addressing this gap. Absorptive capacity refers to a firm&#x2019;s ability to acquire, assimilate, transform and exploit external knowledge for innovation and adaptation (Cohen &#x0026; Levinthal <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0022">1990</xref>; Teece <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0068">2007</xref>; Zahra &#x0026; George <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0081">2002</xref>). Prior studies have often positioned absorptive capacity as an antecedent or mediator of innovation, agility or performance (Bhatti et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0015">2021</xref>; Makhloufi et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0048">2021</xref>; Tufan &#x0026; Mert <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0072">2023</xref>). This perspective is useful, but it provides limited explanation of why agile firms may differ in their ability to convert rapid responses into substantive business model renewal. This study, therefore, positions absorptive capacity as a moderating capability. Strategic agility may enable firms to respond quickly to environmental change, but absorptive capacity helps determine whether such responses are informed by relevant market, technological, regulatory and customer knowledge. In SOEs, this role is especially important because external knowledge may be available, but bureaucratic routines and limited managerial autonomy may hinder its transformation into new services, delivery systems, digital platforms or customer engagement mechanisms. The theoretical gap addressed in this study lies in the limited explanation of why strategic agility does not always translate into business model renewal and FP. While dynamic capability theory emphasises sensing, seizing and reconfiguring, prior research has paid less attention to the mechanisms and boundary conditions that determine whether agile responses become substantive BMI, especially in SOEs, where bureaucratic routines, public service obligations, regulatory control and limited managerial autonomy may constrain strategic renewal. This study addresses this gap by positioning BMI as the value-conversion mechanism and absorptive capacity as the knowledge-processing boundary condition that strengthens the conversion of strategic agility into BMI. The present research examines the relationships among strategic agility, BMI, absorptive capacity and FP in logistics firms under the Indonesian government. The questions for this research are: (1) Is there any relationship between strategic agility and FP and BMI?, (2) Does BMI mediate the relationship between strategic agility and FP?, (3) Does absorptive capacity moderate the relationship between strategic agility and BMI?. This study offers three contributions. Firstly, it extends the strategic agility&#x2013;BMI&#x2013;performance model by examining it in an institutionally constrained SOE logistics context. Secondly, it advances dynamic capability theory by positioning BMI as a value-conversion mechanism that links strategic agility to FP. Thirdly, it conceptualises absorptive capacity as an internal knowledge-processing boundary condition that explains why some agile firms are more capable than others of converting rapid responses into substantive BMI. The study also provides practical insights for state-owned logistics enterprises seeking to strengthen strategic transformation in response to changes in the digital economy.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s0002">
<title>Literature analysis and study hypothesis</title>
<sec id="s20003">
<title>Dynamic capabilities</title>
<p>The dynamic capability theory provides an overarching theoretical foundation for this research, offering insights into how organisations detect environmental changes, capitalise on them and realign their resources (Teece <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0068">2007</xref>; Teece et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0070">1997</xref>). The dynamic capability theory aligns with the resource-based theory (RBT), which states that competitive advantage results from valued, scarce, non-imitable and organised resources (Barney, Ketchen &#x0026; Wright <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0012">2021</xref>). While RBT focuses on resource ownership, dynamic capability theory explains how firms sustain competitiveness by renewing and redeploying resources in changing environments. This perspective is particularly relevant to SOEs, where the deployment of dynamic capabilities is institutionally complex. State-owned enterprises must balance commercial objectives with public, political, regulatory and socio-economic mandates while maintaining legitimacy, accountability, transparency and political control (Larsen, Volden &#x0026; Andersen <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0041">2021</xref>). In Indonesia, SOEs play important roles in providing public goods and services, supporting government programmes, creating employment, assisting small businesses and contributing to government revenue (Jahja et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0033">2020</xref>). However, Indonesian SOEs may also face bureaucratic procedures, governance complexity, limited managerial discretion, soft-budget constraints, policy burdens, agency problems and weaker incentives for innovation and efficiency (Arif &#x0026; Sule <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0007">2019</xref>; Astami et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0009">2010</xref>; Jahja et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0033">2020</xref>). This creates a theoretical tension: government support and institutional legitimacy may provide advantages, but bureaucratic and institutional constraints may weaken strategic responsiveness and innovation. In state-owned logistics firms, this tension becomes more salient. Logistics firms operate in a sector shaped by digital transformation, rising customer expectations for speed and reliability and pressure to improve operational efficiency (Dovbischuk <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0026">2021</xref>; Kuteyi &#x0026; Winkler <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0040">2022</xref>; Verhoef et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0075">2021</xref>). At the same time, state-owned logistics firms must respond to market and technological changes while maintaining public service responsibilities, regulatory compliance and accountability to government stakeholders (Larsen et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0041">2021</xref>; Uyar, Fernandes &#x0026; Kuzey <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0073">2021</xref>). Because logistics performance is influenced by governance quality, infrastructure, technological adoption and reliable service delivery, performance improvement depends not only on state resources or institutional support but also on the capability to sense market changes, reconfigure service delivery systems and renew business models (Teece <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0068">2007</xref>; Uyar et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0073">2021</xref>). Accordingly, SOE performance cannot be explained solely by resource ownership or government support. It depends on whether SOEs can deploy dynamic capabilities to transform environmental change and institutional constraints into adaptive strategic action. Under such circumstances, strategic agility can be viewed as the sensing and seizing element of dynamic capabilities, BMI as the reconfiguration element and absorptive capacity as the knowledge processing capability that facilitates sensing, learning and reconfiguration through acquiring, assimilating, transforming and exploiting knowledge from outside sources (Cohen &#x0026; Levinthal <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0022">1990</xref>; Zahra &#x0026; George <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0081">2002</xref>). Thus, this article conceptualises strategic agility as an adaptive capability, BMI as the mechanism by which agile responses are converted into performance outcomes and absorptive capacity as the boundary condition that helps convert strategic agility into BMI in SOEs engaged in logistics.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s20004">
<title>Strategic agility and firm performance</title>
<p>Strategic agility refers to an organisation&#x2019;s ability to sense environmental changes, respond flexibly to market and technological shifts and realign strategic actions and resources accordingly (Adomako et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0001">2022</xref>; Clauss et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0021">2021</xref>; Liu et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0046">2023b</xref>). From the dynamic capability perspective, strategic agility enables firms to translate environmental sensing into timely strategic responses. This capability becomes increasingly important in turbulent and digitalised environments, where firms must continuously adjust strategic priorities, resource allocation and operations (Tallon &#x0026; Pinsonneault <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0067">2011</xref>; Teece <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0068">2007</xref>; Troise et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0071">2022</xref>). Firm performance in this study refers to the extent to which firms achieve market, financial and operational outcomes, including sales growth, service quality, productivity, delivery reliability and competitive position (Rajapathirana &#x0026; Hui <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0058">2018</xref>; Tajvidi &#x0026; Karami <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0066">2021</xref>). Prior studies generally suggest that strategic agility enhances FP because agile firms are more responsive to environmental change, better able to improve internal processes and more capable of sustaining competitiveness (AlTaweel &#x0026; Al-Hawary <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0006">2021</xref>; Arokodare &#x0026; Ph <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0008">2021</xref>; Yildiz &#x0026; Aykanat <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0080">2021</xref>). These findings are especially relevant in dynamic markets characterised by uncertainty, digitalisation and competitive pressure (Ahammad et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0002">2021</xref>; Jafari-sadeghi et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0032">2022</xref>; Troise et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0071">2022</xref>). However, the strategic agility&#x2013;performance relationship should not be treated as automatic. Although speed, flexibility, and responsiveness are important, they may generate limited performance gains if agile actions remain confined to short-term operational or administrative adjustments rather than being translated into substantive resource reconfiguration, service renewal and BMI (Clauss <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0020">2016</xref>; Clauss et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0021">2021</xref>; Teece <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0069">2010</xref>). This issue is particularly relevant in state-owned logistics firms because strategic responsiveness is shaped not only by market pressures but also by governance structures, public service obligations, bureaucratic procedures and ownership-related constraints. These conditions may hinder the translation of strategic responses into performance improvements, as prior studies show that public and corporate governance, bureaucratic barriers, infrastructure limitations and financing constraints significantly affect logistics performance (Kuteyi &#x0026; Winkler <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0040">2022</xref>; Liu et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0045">2023a</xref>; Uyar et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0073">2021</xref>). Moreover, logistics performance is not limited to financial results but also includes delivery reliability, delivery speed, service responsiveness, operational productivity and digital service capability. Prior studies show that indicators such as timeliness, order accuracy, complaint handling, real-time tracking and information transparency are central to logistics competitiveness in digital and e-commerce-based environments (Al-Shboul <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0004">2022</xref>; Li et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0044">2022</xref>; Wu et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0078">2023</xref>). Therefore, the effect of strategic agility on FP requires further examination in the context of state-owned logistics firms:</p>
<p><bold>H1:</bold> Strategic agility has a positive and significant effect on firm performance.</p>
<p>The next subsection extends this argument by examining whether strategic agility leads to BMI, which represents a more substantive form of strategic renewal.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s20005">
<title>Strategic agility and business model innovation</title>
<p>Business model innovation refers to changes in the logic of value creation, value delivery and value capture (Clauss <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0020">2016</xref>; Teece <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0069">2010</xref>). Compared with product, process or operational innovation, BMI involves a broader redesign of the firm&#x2019;s value proposition, activity system, revenue logic and cost structure (Chen, Liu &#x0026; Wang <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0019">2021</xref>; Clauss <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0020">2016</xref>; Clauss et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0021">2021</xref>). From a dynamic capability perspective, BMI reflects the reconfiguration of resources and business logic that enables firms to adapt to changing market and technological conditions. Strategic agility is expected to foster BMI because agile firms are more capable of detecting environmental shifts, making timely decisions, and reallocating resources towards emerging opportunities (Adomako et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0001">2022</xref>; Clauss et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0021">2021</xref>; Troise et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0071">2022</xref>). Prior studies suggest that strategically agile organisations are more likely to renew their business models because agility enables firms to modify their value creation, value delivery and value capture mechanisms in response to external change (Albayraktaroglu <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0003">2024</xref>; Clauss et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0021">2021</xref>; Yildiz &#x0026; Aykanat <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0080">2021</xref>). Nevertheless, not all agile responses result in BMI. Some agile actions may remain limited to temporary administrative adjustments, incremental process improvements or short-term operational responses, whereas BMI requires deeper reconfiguration of the firm&#x2019;s value proposition, activity configuration, service delivery and value capture logic (Clauss <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0020">2016</xref>; Clauss et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0021">2021</xref>; Teece <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0069">2010</xref>). This distinction is particularly important in state-owned logistics firms, where bureaucratic procedures, regulatory controls, public service obligations and ownership-related constraints may limit the extent to which strategic responsiveness can be converted into substantive business model renewal. In logistics services, business model renewal may involve redesigning service delivery systems, improving digital tracking and information transparency, strengthening last-mile delivery, expanding partner networks and developing more customer-oriented logistics solutions as part of broader changes in value creation, value delivery and value capture mechanisms (Clauss et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0021">2021</xref>; Kuteyi &#x0026; Winkler <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0040">2022</xref>; Teece <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0069">2010</xref>). Thus, the gap lies in explaining whether strategic agility in state-owned logistics firms produces substantive BMI rather than merely operational flexibility. This study argues that strategic agility provides the adaptive basis for BMI by enabling state-owned logistics firms to convert environmental responsiveness into renewed value creation, value delivery and value capture mechanisms:</p>
<p><bold>H2:</bold> Strategic agility has a positive and significant effect on business model innovation.</p>
<p>With the identification of strategic agility as an antecedent of BMI, the next subsection examines the possibility of the influence of FP on BMI.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s20006">
<title>Business model innovation and firm performance</title>
<p>Business model innovation contributes to FP by enabling firms to align their business logic with changing customer needs, technological developments and competitive conditions. Through the redesign of value propositions, activity systems, revenue models and cost structures, firms can transform existing resources and capabilities into renewed sources of value and competitive advantage (Chen et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0019">2021</xref>; Clauss et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0021">2021</xref>; Teece <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0069">2010</xref>). Most of the previous literature suggests that BMI enhances FP by increasing customer value, improving operational efficiency, creating new revenue streams and achieving competitive advantage (Menter et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0049">2023</xref>; Salfore, Ensermu &#x0026; Kinde <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0060">2023</xref>; Tajvidi &#x0026; Karami <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0066">2021</xref>). This is particularly relevant in the logistics and service industries, where digitalisation, service reliability, customer responsiveness and competitive pressures require firms to renew not only their operations but also their overall business logic (Bogale, Birbirsa &#x0026; Abegaz <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0016">2025</xref>; Dovbischuk <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0026">2021</xref>). However, the influence of BMI on FP should not be assumed to be automatic. According to Latifi, Nikou and Bouwman (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0042">2021</xref>), the association between BMI and FP was rendered insignificant when efficiency, revenue generation and organisational abilities were used as mediating variables. This suggests that BMI improves performance when business model changes are effectively translated into efficiency gains, revenue growth and capability development. Thus, BMI should be viewed not merely as an innovation activity but as a reconfiguration process whose performance effects depend on implementation and contextual conditions. This issue is particularly important in state-owned logistics firms, where bureaucratic routines, public mandates, regulatory constraints and limited managerial autonomy may restrict the extent to which business model changes can be implemented (Kuteyi &#x0026; Winkler <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0040">2022</xref>; Uyar et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0073">2021</xref>). On the one hand, BMI may help these firms improve customer value, service delivery, operational efficiency, delivery reliability and financial outcomes by reconfiguring the mechanisms of value creation, value delivery and value capture (Clauss <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0020">2016</xref>; Clauss et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0021">2021</xref>; Teece <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0069">2010</xref>). On the other hand, institutional constraints may reduce the speed and depth of business model renewal, making its performance effect dependent on effective implementation and contextual conditions (Latifi et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0042">2021</xref>). Therefore, this study addresses the gap in understanding whether BMI enhances FP in state-owned logistics firms, where performance improvement may require more than incremental operational change:</p>
<p><bold>H3:</bold> Business model innovation exerts a positive and statistically significant influence on firm performance.</p>
<p>Building on the expected effects of strategic agility on BMI and BMI on FP, the next subsection examines the mediating role of BMI.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s20007">
<title>Business model innovation as a mediator of the relationship between strategic agility and firm performance</title>
<p>Strategic agility is expected to improve FP both directly and indirectly through BMI. From the dynamic capability perspective, sensing and seizing capabilities do not automatically generate superior performance unless they are followed by effective reconfiguration (Teece <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0068">2007</xref>). In this study, BMI represents the reconfiguration mechanism through which agile responses are transformed into renewed business logic and performance-enhancing outcomes. Business model innovation is positioned as the central mediating mechanism because it captures how firms redesign the logic of value creation, value delivery and value capture. Although digital capability, operational flexibility and innovation capability are important for explaining adaptation and performance, they do not fully explain how strategic responsiveness is converted into renewed business logic (Bharadwaj <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0014">2000</xref>; Lawson &#x0026; Samson <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0043">2001</xref>; Tallon &#x0026; Pinsonneault <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0067">2011</xref>). Business model innovation is therefore more relevant to this study because it explains how firms reconfigure value propositions, activities, partners, cost structures and revenue mechanisms to generate performance outcomes (Clauss et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0021">2021</xref>; Teece <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0069">2010</xref>; Zott &#x0026; Amit <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0083">2010</xref>). Although Clauss et al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0021">2021</xref>) demonstrated that BMI mediates the relationship between strategic agility and FP, their study focused on firms in the electronics industry and examined environmental turbulence as the main boundary condition. This leaves an important gap in understanding whether the same mechanism operates in state-owned logistics firms, where strategic responsiveness may be constrained by bureaucratic procedures, public service obligations, regulatory control and limited managerial autonomy. This mediating logic is particularly important in state-owned logistics firms because such institutional constraints can weaken the conversion of strategic agility into performance-enhancing outcomes. Under these conditions, agile responses are likely to remain symbolic, administrative or operational unless they are translated into substantive business model renewal through changes in value creation, value delivery and value capture mechanisms (Clauss et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0021">2021</xref>; Kuteyi &#x0026; Winkler <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0040">2022</xref>; Teece <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0069">2010</xref>; Uyar et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0073">2021</xref>). Therefore, this study argues that BMI serves as the mediating mechanism linking strategic agility to improved market, financial and operational outcomes in state-owned logistics firms:</p>
<p><bold>H4:</bold> Business model innovation mediates the relationship between strategic agility and firm performance.</p>
<p>Although BMI explains how strategic agility affects performance, the effectiveness of the agility&#x2013;innovation conversion may depend on the firm&#x2019;s ability to process and use external knowledge. This issue is addressed through the moderating role of absorptive capacity.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s20008">
<title>Absorptive capacity as a moderator of the relationship between strategic agility and business model innovation</title>
<p>Although prior research has shown that environmental turbulence strengthens the relationship between strategic agility and BMI, it primarily captures external pressure for business model renewal (Clauss et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0021">2021</xref>). It does not fully explain whether firms possess the internal knowledge-processing capability required to convert agile responses into substantive BMI. This study, therefore, extends prior research by positioning absorptive capacity as a moderating capability that strengthens the relationship between strategic agility and BMI. Absorptive capacity refers to the ability of an organisation to absorb, assimilate, convert and utilise external knowledge to facilitate learning and innovation (Cohen &#x0026; Levinthal <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0022">1990</xref>; Zahra &#x0026; George <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0081">2002</xref>). This capability comprises potential absorptive capacity, which involves knowledge absorption and acquisition, and realised absorptive capacity, which involves knowledge conversion and utilisation (Zahra &#x0026; George <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0081">2002</xref>). This distinction is important because external knowledge does not automatically lead to innovation unless firms can recognise, interpret, transform and apply it to renew their business models. Prior studies have commonly positioned absorptive capacity as an antecedent of innovation, agility or performance, while others have treated it as a mediating mechanism through which external knowledge is transformed into competitive advantage or performance outcomes (Bakkar, Li &#x0026; Nafizur <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0011">2023</xref>; Bhatti et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0015">2021</xref>; Makhloufi et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0048">2021</xref>; Tufan &#x0026; Mert <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0072">2023</xref>). While these perspectives are valuable, they offer only a limited explanation of why some agile firms is more successful than others at converting strategic responsiveness into BMI. Therefore, this research offers an alternative perspective on absorptive capacity as a moderating variable. Strategic agility enables firms to respond effectively to environmental changes, but absorptive capacity determines how much external knowledge they use to create new value. The moderating role of absorptive capacity is particularly important in state-owned logistics firms, where institutional constraints may limit experimentation and slow the use of external knowledge in redesigning business models. In this context, absorptive capacity can strengthen the agility&#x2013;innovation link by ensuring that agile responses are informed by relevant market, technological and customer knowledge and translated into meaningful business model reconfiguration (Cohen &#x0026; Levinthal <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0022">1990</xref>; Kuteyi &#x0026; Winkler <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0040">2022</xref>; Uyar et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0073">2021</xref>; Zahra &#x0026; George <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0081">2002</xref>). This role becomes more important under conditions of digitalisation, complex customer needs, service reliability demands and strong institutional constraints, where firms require richer external knowledge to renew their business models (Teece <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0068">2007</xref>; Verhoef et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0075">2021</xref>). Therefore, absorptive capacity is positioned as a boundary condition rather than merely as another antecedent of BMI. Firms with stronger absorptive capacity are expected to convert strategic agility into BMI more effectively because they can acquire, interpret, transform and exploit external knowledge in renewing their business models:</p>
<p><bold>H5:</bold> Absorptive capacity moderates the relationship between strategic agility and business model innovation, such that the positive influence of strategic agility on business model innovation is conditional on a certain level of absorptive capacity.</p>
<p>Drawing on the theoretical foundation and prior empirical findings, the conceptual model is presented in <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F0001">Figure 1</xref>.</p>

<title>Methods</title>
<sec id="s20010">
<title>Sampling and data collection</title>
<p>A questionnaire-based survey was administered via Google Forms, with data collected between August and October 2024. The research focused on an SOE in the logistics sector operating on Java Island, with branch offices distributed across several provinces, including DKI Jakarta, West Java, Central Java and East Java. Java Island was chosen as the research setting because of its significantly higher productivity and economic contribution compared with other regions in Indonesia, providing a relevant context for analysing managerial decision-making and FP in the logistics industry. The respondents were managerial-level employees with the authority to make strategic decisions and drive BMI within their respective organisational units. The total population of managerial employees operating on Java Island was 3416. Based on the Krejcie and Morgan (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0038">1970</xref>) formula, the minimum required sample size was 345 respondents. A total of 427 valid responses were obtained, indicating that the sample size exceeded the minimum requirement and was sufficient to represent the target population. A proportionate stratified random sampling technique was employed, with internal organisational units as strata. This procedure was adopted to ensure balanced representation across the company&#x2019;s structural divisions within these operational areas. This approach strengthened the structural representativeness of the sample while maintaining consistency within a relatively homogeneous governance and management framework. The study began with a brief introductory page outlining the research objectives and informing respondents that participation was voluntary and anonymous. No personal identifiers were collected, and the information was used solely for research purposes in accordance with established ethical guidelines. Given this research design, the relationships examined in the structural model should be interpreted as associational rather than strictly causal. Although the proposed model is theoretically grounded in dynamic capability theory and prior empirical research, the cross-sectional data gathered using self-report surveys make it challenging to determine the temporal ordering of the constructs. Consequently, the findings indicate the strength and direction of statistical relationships among strategic agility, BMI, absorptive capacity and FP, but they do not provide definitive evidence of causality.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s20011">
<title>Sample profile</title>
<p><xref ref-type="table" rid="T0001">Table 1</xref> shows that the most participants had held their current positions for 1&#x2013;5 years (55.3&#x0025;), followed by those with less than 1 year of tenure (30.7&#x0025;), suggesting a relatively recent distribution of role assignments. In contrast, overall work experience was substantial, with 72.6&#x0025; of respondents having more than 10 years of service, indicating strong organisational familiarity and accumulated experience. In terms of educational background, the majority of respondents held a diploma or a bachelor&#x2019;s degree (55.3&#x0025;), while 38.6&#x0025; had a senior high school or vocational education, and only a small proportion held postgraduate qualifications. The sample was predominantly male (74.0&#x0025;), with 26.0&#x0025; female respondents. Regarding age, most respondents were in the 31 years to 50 years range (71.2&#x0025;), followed by those aged 50+ (25.3&#x0025;), reflecting a mature, experienced workforce capable of providing informed assessments of organisational practices and performance.</p>

<title>Questionnaire design and measurement</title>
<p>Absorptive capacity, strategic agility, BMI and FP were measured using items adapted from well-established scales in prior empirical research to ensure content validity and theoretical consistency. Each item was evaluated using a five-point Likert scale, with response options ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). Absorptive capacity was measured using eight items that capture knowledge acquisition, assimilation, transformation and application, adapted from Sheng and Chien (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0062">2016</xref>), Miroshnychenko et al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0050">2021</xref>), Ma et al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0047">2021</xref>), Dabi&#x0107; et al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0023">2023</xref>) and Khan, Lew and Marinova (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0037">2019</xref>). Business model innovation was operationalised with 10 items reflecting customer orientation, value creation, technological opportunities, pricing strategies and cost efficiency, primarily adapted from Clauss et al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0021">2021</xref>). Strategic agility was assessed using eight items that capture sensing, responsiveness, flexibility and rapid organisational adjustment, adapted from Clauss et al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0021">2021</xref>), Adomako et al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0001">2022</xref>) and Liu et al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0046">2023b</xref>). Firm performance was measured using six subjective indicators reflecting sales growth, service quality improvement, revenue growth, delivery reliability and productivity, adapted from Latifi et al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0042">2021</xref>), Rajapathirana and Hui (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0058">2018</xref>), Tajvidi and Karami (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0066">2021</xref>), Alsheyadi (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0005">2022</xref>) and Wang, Wang and Liang (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0077">2014</xref>). Subjective FP measures were used because comparable objective financial and operational key performance indicator (KPIs) at the respondent or organisational-unit level were not publicly available and could not be accessed because of organisational confidentiality restrictions. In addition, objective performance data were not available in a consistent, comparable format across branches, making direct cross-unit comparisons less straightforward. This condition is consistent with prior performance-measurement research, which notes that objective performance data may be difficult to obtain, confidential, aggregated at a higher organisational level or not aligned with the unit of analysis (Dess &#x0026; Robinson <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0025">1984</xref>; Wall et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0076">2004</xref>). Yildiz and Karaka&#x015F; (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0079">2012</xref>) also noted that objective performance data are often difficult to obtain because firms generally do not wish to disclose such information. Prior studies have also shown that perceptual or subjective performance assessments can serve as valid proxies for objective performance when objective indicators are unavailable or difficult to obtain, particularly when the measures are adapted from established scales and reported by knowledgeable managers (Dess &#x0026; Robinson <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0025">1984</xref>; Venkatraman &#x0026; Ramanujam <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0074">1986</xref>; Wall et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0076">2004</xref>). Therefore, subjective performance measures were considered appropriate in this study because the respondents were managerial-level employees with sufficient knowledge of strategic decisions, innovation activities and operational outcomes within their respective units. This decision was further supported by the respondent profile, in which 72.6&#x0025; had more than 10 years of work experience, and 55.3&#x0025; had held their current managerial positions for 1&#x2013;5 years, indicating sufficient organisational familiarity and managerial exposure to provide informed performance assessments. A pilot study with 30 managerial-level respondents was conducted to assess item clarity, wording and internal consistency reliability. Based on the pilot results, minor refinements were implemented to improve readability and ensure the questionnaire&#x2019;s suitability for the main survey.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s20013">
<title>Data analysis</title>
<sec id="s30014">
<title>Common method variance</title>
<p>Because the data were collected using a cross-sectional, self-reported questionnaire, common method variance (CMV) was addressed using both procedural remedies and statistical diagnostics. Procedural remedies were embedded in the survey administration process, including respondent anonymity, the absence of personal identifiers, voluntary participation, neutral item wording and an instruction that there were no right or wrong answers. These procedures were intended to reduce evaluation apprehension, social desirability bias and consistency motives (Podsakoff et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0054">2003</xref>). Statistically, Harman&#x2019;s single-factor test was conducted using exploratory factor analysis in Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) (IBM Corporation, Armonk, NY, United States). This test suggests that CMV may be a concern when the first unrotated factor accounts for more than 50&#x0025; of the total variance. The first unrotated factor in this study explained 44.91&#x0025; of the total variance, which is below the 50&#x0025; threshold. This result indicates that no single factor dominated the covariance among the measurement items, suggesting that CMV was unlikely to substantially bias the findings.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s30015">
<title>Control variables</title>
<p>To improve the robustness of the structural model, this study included several respondent-level control variables that may influence FP: Managerial tenure, education level, age, gender and work experience. The inclusion of theoretically justified control variables helps account for plausible alternative explanations and supports a more cautious interpretation of the main structural relationships. However, following best-practice recommendations, control variables should be selected based on theoretical relevance rather than included mechanically (Bernerth &#x0026; Aguinis <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0013">2016</xref>; Nielsen &#x0026; Raswant <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0053">2018</xref>; Sturman, Sturman &#x0026; Sturman <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0065">2022</xref>). Managerial tenure, education, age, gender and work experience were added as control variables to account for demographic factors that could influence FP. The reason for adding managerial tenure as a control variable was that past studies show that the duration of managerial experience affects decision-making tendencies and risk behaviour and hence performance outcomes (Cao, Im &#x0026; Syed <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0018">2021</xref>; Darouichi et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0024">2021</xref>). Education was also included in the model as a control variable, considering the importance of human capital, in the form of education, for enhanced productivity, innovative ability and firm value (Braunerhjelm &#x0026; Lappi <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0017">2023</xref>; Sisodia, Jadiyappa &#x0026; Joseph <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0064">2021</xref>). Age was used as a control variable because of its potential effects on adaptability, knowledge and behaviour at work, which could influence organisational performance (Kunze, Boehm &#x0026; Bruch <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0039">2021</xref>; Mothe &#x0026; Nguyen-thi <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0052">2021</xref>). Gender was added to the model as another possible influence on management decisions and performance outcomes (Hoogendoorn, Oosterbeek &#x0026; Van Praag <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0031">2013</xref>; Sieweke, Bostandzic &#x0026; Smolinski <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0063">2023</xref>). Finally, work experience was controlled for because accumulated experience represents an important dimension of human capital that can enhance managerial capability and productivity although its impact may vary depending on context (Braunerhjelm &#x0026; Lappi <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0017">2023</xref>; Hahn &#x0026; Kim <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0029">2022</xref>). By including these control variables, this study aims to better isolate the effects of the main constructs and provide a more accurate estimation of the relationships under investigation. Firm size was not included because the study focused on managerial respondents within organisational units of a single enterprise rather than independent firms. Differences across organisational units were addressed through proportionate stratified sampling. Environmental turbulence and digital maturity were not included because they were not measured in the survey and are therefore acknowledged as limitations and directions for future research.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s30016">
<title>Measurement and structural model assessment</title>
<p>The measurement model was assessed for reliability and validity of the constructs using established criteria for partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM). Partial least squares structural equation modelling was selected rather than covariance-based SEM for three reasons. Firstly, the study&#x2019;s objective was primarily explanatory and prediction-oriented, focusing on the variance explained by key endogenous constructs such as BMI and FP. Secondly, the research model included multiple latent constructs, mediation, moderation and control variables, making PLS-SEM appropriate for estimating complex structural relationships. Thirdly, PLS-SEM is suitable for survey-based management research when the emphasis is on prediction, theory development and the assessment of path relationships rather than strict model-fit confirmation (Hair et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0030">2021</xref>; Sarstedt et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0061">2022</xref>). Indicator reliability was assessed using outer loading values, with values above 0.70 considered satisfactory. Indicators with loadings between 0.40 and 0.70 were retained if internal consistency reliability and convergent validity met recommended thresholds, as outlined by Hair et al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0030">2021</xref>). Internal consistency reliability was further evaluated using composite reliability (CR), and all constructs exceeded the minimum threshold of 0.60, indicating acceptable reliability (Hair et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0030">2021</xref>). Convergent validity was evaluated using the average variance extracted (AVE). An AVE value exceeding 0.50 demonstrates that each construct accounts for more than half of the variance in its indicators (Hair et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0030">2021</xref>). Collinearity among predictor constructs was assessed using the variance inflation factor (VIF). Following Hair et al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0030">2021</xref>), VIF values of 5.0 or higher indicate critical collinearity issues. Discriminant validity was assessed using the Heterotrait&#x2013;Monotrait ratio (HTMT), which is recommended as the primary criterion for assessing discriminant validity in PLS-SEM (Hair et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0030">2021</xref>). The HTMT values should be below 0.90 to indicate adequate discriminant validity. Following the evaluation of the measurement model, the structural model was analysed to investigate the relationships among latent variables. The explanatory power of the model was determined using <italic>R</italic><sup>2</sup> values for endogenous constructs, with higher <italic>R</italic><sup>2</sup> values indicating greater predictive accuracy (Hair et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0030">2021</xref>). Model fit was further evaluated using the standardised root mean square residual (SRMR). An SRMR value below 0.08 indicated an acceptable model fit, suggesting that the structural model adequately represented the observed data (Hair et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0030">2021</xref>).</p>
<p>The measurement and structural models used in this study are illustrated in <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F0002">Figure 2</xref>.</p>

<title>Hypothesis testing</title>
<p>Hypothesis testing was conducted using PLS-SEM, with <italic>t</italic>-statistics and <italic>p</italic>-values obtained via bootstrapping. Path coefficients were considered statistically significant when the <italic>t</italic>-value exceeded 1.645 for a one-tailed test at the 5&#x0025; significance level, with <italic>p</italic>-values below 0.05, following established guidelines (Hair et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0030">2021</xref>). The significance of mediating effects was assessed using bootstrapping, which is recommended for its robustness to non-normal data and its ability to generate accurate confidence intervals for indirect effects (Hair et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0030">2021</xref>; Preacher &#x0026; Hayes <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0055">2008</xref>). Bootstrapping was performed in SmartPLS (SmartPLS GmbH, Monheim am Rhein, Germany) with 10 000 resamples and a 95&#x0025; percentile confidence interval. An indirect effect was deemed significant if the confidence interval did not include zero. Mediation was classified as no mediation, partial mediation (complementary mediation) or full mediation (indirect-only mediation) based on the significance of the direct and indirect effects (Hair et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0030">2021</xref>; Zhao, Lynch &#x0026; Chen <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0082">2010</xref>). Moderation analysis involved estimating an interaction term between the independent variable and the moderator to determine whether the relationship between constructs varied as a function of the moderator. The significance of the moderating effect was evaluated using bootstrapping, and the effect was confirmed when the interaction term was statistically significant (Hair et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0030">2021</xref>). The interaction between absorptive capacity and strategic agility on BMI produces an &#x0192;<sup>2</sup> value of 0.023, indicating a small moderating effect according to the commonly applied effect-size cutoffs of 0.02 (small), 0.15 (medium) and 0.35 (large) (Hair et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0030">2021</xref>). Significant moderation effects were illustrated with slope plots to visualise differences in the relationships between the independent and dependent variables at different levels of the moderator.</p>
</sec>
</sec>
<sec id="s20018">
<title>Ethical considerations</title>
<p>Ethical clearance to conduct this study was obtained from the Universitas Brawijaya Faculty of Medicine Health Research Ethics Committee (No. 285/KEPK/09/2024), received 05 August 2024.</p>

</sec>
<sec id="s0019">
<title>Results</title>
<sec id="s20020">
<title>Measurement model results</title>
<p>The results of the PLS-SEM analysis in this study are presented in <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F0003">Figure 3</xref>, which illustrates the measurement and structural model, including the relationships among the constructs and their respective indicators.</p>

<p>The assessment of the measurement model is summarised in <xref ref-type="table" rid="T0002">Table 2</xref>. Based on <xref ref-type="table" rid="T0002">Table 2</xref>, item BM10 has a factor loading slightly below the recommended threshold of 0.70, at 0.699. However, the item was retained because its loading was very close to the recommended threshold, and the corresponding construct met the recommended criteria for CR (&#x003E; 0.60) and AVE (&#x003E; 0.50). In accordance with Hair et al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0030">2021</xref>), indicators with loadings between 0.40 and 0.70 should not be automatically eliminated; instead, their removal should be considered only when it improves internal consistency reliability or convergent validity while also taking content validity into account. Therefore, BM10 was retained in this study. In addition, all VIF values were below the commonly accepted threshold of 5.0, suggesting that indicator collinearity was not a serious concern. Overall, based on the factor loadings, CR, AVE and VIF values, all indicators meet the criteria for indicator reliability, internal consistency and convergent validity, while collinearity among indicators is adequately controlled within acceptable limits. Consequently, all indicators were deemed suitable for further analysis.</p>

<title>Discriminant validity results</title>
<p>Discriminant validity was assessed using the HTMT. The HTMT values should be below 0.90 to indicate adequate discriminant validity. As presented in <xref ref-type="table" rid="T0003">Table 3</xref>, all HTMT values are below the recommended threshold, indicating that the constructs are empirically distinct and that the discriminant validity requirement has been satisfactorily achieved.</p>

<p>The <italic>R</italic><sup>2</sup> value of 0.673 for BMI demonstrates substantial explanatory power, while the value of 0.465 for FP indicates moderate explanatory power. These results suggest that the model is sufficiently robust for hypothesis testing. The SRMR value of 0.060 in this study demonstrates that the model achieves an acceptable level of fit. The significance of the estimated path coefficients was used to evaluate the proposed hypotheses, as summarised in <xref ref-type="table" rid="T0005">Table 5</xref>.</p>

<p><xref ref-type="table" rid="T0005">Table 5</xref> shows that strategic agility is positively and significantly associated with FP (<italic>&#x03B2;</italic> = 0.259; <italic>p</italic> &#x003C; 0.001), supporting H1. Strategic agility is also positively and significantly associated with BMI (<italic>&#x03B2;</italic> = 0.637; <italic>p</italic> &#x003C; 0.001), supporting H2. In addition, BMI is positively related to FP (<italic>&#x03B2;</italic> = 0.455; <italic>p</italic> &#x003C; 0.001), providing support for H3. Mediation analysis indicates that BMI partially mediates the relationship between strategic agility and FP (<italic>&#x03B2;</italic> = 0.290; <italic>p</italic> &#x003C; 0.001), supporting H4. These findings suggest that firms reporting higher levels of strategic agility also tend to report higher levels of FP, both directly and indirectly through higher levels of BMI. Furthermore, absorptive capacity significantly moderates the relationship between strategic agility and BMI (<italic>&#x03B2;</italic> = 0.076; <italic>p</italic> = 0.001), supporting H5. The results of the moderation analysis are presented in <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F0004">Figure 4</xref>.</p>

<p>The interaction between absorptive capacity and strategic agility on BMI produces an &#x0192;<sup>2</sup> value of 0.023, indicating a small moderating effect. This finding aligns with the slope plot (<xref ref-type="fig" rid="F0002">Figure 2</xref>), which demonstrates that the positive association between strategic agility and BMI becomes stronger at higher levels of absorptive capacity. Specifically, the slope for high absorptive capacity (+1 standard deviation [SD]) is steeper than the slopes for mean and low absorptive capacity (&#x2013;1 SD), suggesting that firms reporting stronger absorptive capacity tend to show a stronger association between strategic agility and BMI. Although the effect size is small, the plot indicates that absorptive capacity plays an enabling role in strengthening the observed agility&#x2013;innovation relationship.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s20023">
<title>Control variable analysis</title>
<p>The results of the control variable analysis are presented in <xref ref-type="table" rid="T0006">Table 6</xref>.</p>

<p>The results of the structural model analysis for both models are summarised in <xref ref-type="table" rid="T0006">Table 6</xref>. The comparison between the model without control variables and the model with control variables shows that the inclusion of demographic controls does not materially alter the direction, magnitude or statistical significance of the main hypothesised relationships. Although slight changes in coefficient values were observed, the major structural relationships remained statistically significant and consistent across both model specifications. Among the control variables, only age showed a significant relationship with FP (<italic>&#x03B2;</italic> = &#x2212;0.098, <italic>p</italic> = 0.004), suggesting that older respondents tended to report slightly lower evaluations of FP. In contrast, management tenure, work experience, educational level and gender did not have significant effects on FP. These results provide additional support for the robustness of the proposed model, as the main statistical relationships remain stable after controlling for respondents&#x2019; demographic characteristics.</p>
</sec>
</sec>
<sec id="s0024">
<title>Discussion</title>
<p>The findings of this study show that strategic agility, BMI and absorptive capacity are significantly associated with FP in a state-owned logistics enterprise. From a dynamic capability perspective, strategic agility reflects the firm&#x2019;s ability to sense environmental change, respond to emerging opportunities and realign resources in a timely manner (Teece <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0068">2007</xref>). However, the findings suggest that the value of strategic agility does not depend only on rapid response. In a state-owned logistics enterprise, strategic agility becomes meaningful when it supports coordinated decision-making, resource realignment and business model renewal under bureaucratic and regulatory constraints. The positive association between strategic agility and FP is consistent with previous studies showing that agile firms tend to perform better because they are more capable of responding to technological disruption, market uncertainty and changing customer expectations (Clauss et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0021">2021</xref>; Kale et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0036">2019</xref>; Tallon &#x0026; Pinsonneault <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0067">2011</xref>). However, this relationship should be interpreted carefully in the context of state-owned logistics firms. Although strategic agility is generally associated with better performance, its practical value may be constrained by bureaucratic procedures, public service obligations, regulatory control and limited managerial autonomy. These conditions can slow decision-making and limit the extent to which agile responses are converted into improved service quality, operational efficiency or market performance. The findings also show that strategic agility is strongly associated with BMI. This result supports prior research that positions strategic agility as an important capability for business model renewal in dynamic and digitalised environments (Albayraktaroglu <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0003">2024</xref>; Clauss et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0021">2021</xref>; Troise et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0071">2022</xref>; Yildiz &#x0026; Aykanat <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0080">2021</xref>). From a dynamic capability perspective, this relationship indicates that sensing and seizing capabilities need to be followed by reconfiguration for firms to adapt effectively to environmental change (Teece <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0068">2007</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0069">2010</xref>). In the logistics sector, strategic agility may help firms identify changes in customer demand, e-commerce growth, digital service expectations and competitive pressure. Nevertheless, agility does not automatically result in BMI. In SOEs, agile responses may remain limited to short-term operational or administrative adjustments when they are not supported by digital readiness, cross-functional coordination and managerial commitment to business model renewal. Although the present findings indicate that strategic agility is positively associated with FP and BMI, this pattern should be interpreted in light of prior studies that have reported weaker, mixed or contingent agility effects. Clauss et al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0021">2021</xref>), for example, found only mixed support for the performance effects of different BMI dimensions and reported that the agility&#x2013;BMI relationship was substantially strengthened by environmental turbulence, suggesting that agility benefits are not uniform across contexts. Reed (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0059">2021</xref>) similarly demonstrated that the strategic agility&#x2013;performance relationship is jointly moderated by firm age and environmental turbulence and even reported that strategic agility may be negatively related to performance under conditions of low environmental turbulence, where the cost of maintaining dynamic capabilities is not offset by adaptive returns. Junni et al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0035">2015</xref>) further noted that empirical evidence on the outcomes of organisational agility remains scarce and inconsistent, with several studies reporting weaker or non-significant effects on performance. In light of these studies, the present findings should not be interpreted as universal evidence of agility&#x2019;s performance benefits. Rather, they suggest that the SOE logistics context may both amplify and constrain the agility&#x2013;BMI&#x2013;performance relationships. On the one hand, the digital transformation of the logistics sector creates high environmental turbulence, including evolving customer expectations, e-commerce growth and intensifying competition, which may amplify the returns to agility (Clauss et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0021">2021</xref>; Reed <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0059">2021</xref>; Verhoef et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0075">2021</xref>). On the other hand, the SOE context may constrain agility outcomes through bureaucratic procedures, regulatory control, public service obligations and limited managerial autonomy, which slow the conversion of agile responses into structured business model renewal (Astami et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0009">2010</xref>; Jakob <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0034">2017</xref>). This dual interpretation helps explain why the agility&#x2013;BMI relationship in this study is moderated by absorptive capacity rather than driven by agility alone, and why the moderation effect, although statistically significant, is small in magnitude. In contexts where institutional rigidity is high, even strong knowledge-processing capability may yield only incremental, rather than transformative business model change. Business model innovation is also positively associated with FP. This finding is consistent with previous studies showing that BMI is related to operational effectiveness, competitiveness and performance outcomes (Menter et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0049">2023</xref>; Salfore et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0060">2023</xref>; Tajvidi &#x0026; Karami <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0066">2021</xref>). In state-owned logistics enterprises, BMI is particularly relevant because traditional logistics services are increasingly challenged by digital platforms, e-commerce ecosystems, changing customer expectations and the demand for faster and more reliable delivery. Under these conditions, performance improvement is unlikely to depend only on isolated process improvements. Instead, it requires more integrated renewal in service offerings, delivery systems, customer interfaces and value capture mechanisms. The mediating role of BMI provides a deeper explanation of how strategic agility is connected with FP. The findings suggest that strategic agility is associated with stronger performance, partly because it is linked to higher levels of BMI. This supports the argument that adaptive responses become more valuable when they are transformed into changes in the firm&#x2019;s value creation, value delivery and value capture logic (Teece <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0069">2010</xref>; Zott &#x0026; Amit <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0083">2010</xref>). This finding also addresses the gap left by prior research, particularly Clauss et al. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0021">2021</xref>), which examined the mediating role of BMI in the electronics industry and treated environmental turbulence as the main boundary condition. By examining a state-owned logistics enterprise, this study shows that BMI also serves as an important value-conversion mechanism in a more bureaucratic and institutionally constrained context. This mediating interpretation also clarifies why BMI is positioned as the central mechanism in this study rather than other possible mechanisms, such as digital capability, operational flexibility or general innovation capability. Digital capability may provide technological infrastructure, and operational flexibility may support adaptive execution, but BMI captures a broader transformation of how the firm creates, delivers and captures value. Thus, in the SOE logistics context, agility is more likely to be connected with performance when it is translated into structured business model renewal rather than remaining limited to operational responsiveness. The moderating role of absorptive capacity further clarifies the conditions under which strategic agility is associated with BMI. This result is important because prior studies have more commonly positioned absorptive capacity as an antecedent or mediator of innovation, agility or performance, rather than as a boundary condition. The finding supports the view that absorptive capacity explains why strategic agility does not always produce the same level of BMI across firms. Strategic agility may enable organisations to respond quickly to environmental changes, but such responses may become reactive, fragmented or misaligned with business model renewal when they are not guided by sufficient knowledge-processing capability. Absorptive capacity strengthens the agility&#x2013;BMI relationship by helping firms acquire and interpret relevant external knowledge, reflecting potential absorptive capacity and transform and apply that knowledge into business model renewal, reflecting realised absorptive capacity (Cohen &#x0026; Levinthal <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0022">1990</xref>; Zahra &#x0026; George <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0081">2002</xref>). Thus, absorptive capacity helps ensure that agile responses are not merely fast but also informed, relevant and aligned with the renewal of value creation, value delivery and value capture mechanisms. In SOEs, this role is especially important because external knowledge may be available, but bureaucratic routines and limited managerial autonomy may hinder its transformation into BMI, such as new services, delivery systems, digital platforms or customer engagement mechanisms. The small effect size of the moderation effect also deserves careful interpretation. The interaction between absorptive capacity and strategic agility has an &#x0192;<sup>2</sup> value of 0.023, indicating a small but significant moderating effect. This suggests that absorptive capacity strengthens the agility&#x2013;BMI relationship, but it is not the only condition that determines whether agility is associated with BMI. Other contextual factors, such as digital maturity, leadership support, regulatory flexibility, organisational culture, resource availability and cross-unit coordination, may also shape this relationship. The moderating role of absorptive capacity is likely to become more meaningful when firms operate under high environmental turbulence, rapid technological change, complex customer demands and strong dependence on external knowledge for business model renewal. This is particularly relevant in state-owned logistics firms, where digital transformation, governance quality, regulatory constraints and organisational capabilities can influence how adaptive responses are converted into BMI and performance outcomes (Kuteyi &#x0026; Winkler <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0040">2022</xref>; Teece <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0068">2007</xref>; Uyar et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0073">2021</xref>; Verhoef et al. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0075">2021</xref>). In the SOE context, bureaucratic procedures, risk-averse decision-making and formal approval systems may limit how quickly and extensively external knowledge is transformed into business model renewal. Taken together, the findings suggest that dynamic capabilities in state-owned logistics enterprises operate under institutional constraints rather than in a frictionless market environment. Strategic agility is associated with FP and BMI, but its value depends on whether adaptive responses are translated into coherent business model renewal. Business model innovation serves as a reconfiguration mechanism, while absorptive capacity supports this process by enabling external knowledge to be interpreted and applied. These findings highlight the importance of organisational context, particularly bureaucracy, regulatory control, digital readiness and managerial autonomy, in shaping the effectiveness of dynamic capabilities (Teece <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0068">2007</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0069">2010</xref>; Zahra &#x0026; George <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="CIT0081">2002</xref>).</p>
<sec id="s20025">
<title>Theoretical implications</title>
<p>This study offers several theoretical implications for the dynamic capability literature by explaining how strategic agility, BMI and absorptive capacity operate as interconnected mechanisms in state-owned logistics enterprises. The theoretical contribution lies not merely in confirming the relationships among these constructs but in clarifying the mechanisms and boundary conditions under which dynamic capabilities become performance-relevant in an institutionally constrained context. Firstly, this study refines the performance logic of strategic agility by showing that its value is context dependent rather than universal. From the dynamic capability perspective, agility becomes performance-relevant when sensing and seizing are followed by effective reconfiguration through resource realignment, cross-unit coordination and strategic process integration. In state-owned logistics enterprises, this means that agility should not be viewed merely as rapid responsiveness, but as a capability whose value depends on whether adaptive responses are embedded within organisational systems that allow them to become meaningful strategic action. Secondly, this study contributes to the literature by positioning BMI as a value-conversion mechanism linking strategic agility and FP. Strategic agility reflects sensing and seizing, while BMI reflects reconfiguration through the renewal of value creation, value delivery and value capture mechanisms. This clarifies why agility alone may not be sufficient to generate performance outcomes. Adaptive responses may remain temporary, operational or administrative unless they are converted into coherent business model renewal. Thirdly, this study sharpens the theoretical role of absorptive capacity by conceptualising it as a boundary condition rather than merely as an antecedent or mediator. The theoretical novelty lies in explaining absorptive capacity as a knowledge-processing condition that determines whether strategic agility is converted into informed, relevant and implementable BMI. Strategic agility may enable firms to respond quickly to environmental change, but absorptive capacity helps determine whether these responses are aligned with business model renewal. This insight helps explain why agility may generate different innovation outcomes across organisations, particularly in SOEs, where external knowledge must pass through bureaucratic routines and constrained managerial discretion before becoming a business model renewal. Fourthly, this study clarifies the relevance of both potential and realised absorptive capacity to the agility&#x2013;BMI relationship. Potential absorptive capacity enables firms to acquire and interpret external knowledge, while realised absorptive capacity enables firms to transform and apply that knowledge into business model renewal. This distinction is important in state-owned logistics enterprises because external knowledge may be available, but bureaucratic routines and limited managerial autonomy may hinder its transformation into new services, delivery systems, digital platforms or customer engagement mechanisms. Fifthly, this study extends dynamic capability theory by highlighting the SOE context as an institutional boundary condition. Much of the dynamic capability literature assumes that firms can reconfigure resources after sensing and seizing opportunities. However, in SOEs, strategic action is shaped by public accountability, regulatory oversight, hierarchical control, risk aversion and public service obligations. Therefore, the effectiveness of dynamic capabilities in SOEs depends not only on firms&#x2019; ability to sense, seize and reconfigure resources but also on institutional and organisational constraints, including bureaucracy, regulatory control and limited managerial autonomy. Taken together, these implications show that dynamic capabilities should be understood as interdependent rather than isolated mechanisms. Strategic agility provides responsiveness, BMI provides the reconfiguration mechanism, and absorptive capacity provides the knowledge-processing condition that strengthens the conversion of agility into business model renewal. This integrated view advances dynamic capability theory by explaining how adaptive capabilities operate within state-owned logistics enterprises, where strategic renewal depends not only on capability possession but also on institutional conditions and organisational readiness.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s20026">
<title>Practical implications</title>
<p>This study offers practical implications for leaders and policymakers in state-owned logistics enterprises undergoing digital transformation. The findings suggest that strategic agility, BMI and absorptive capacity should be managed as interconnected capabilities rather than as separate managerial initiatives. To make these capabilities operational, organisations need clear interventions, responsible units and measurable managerial outcomes. Firstly, strategic agility should be institutionalised through stronger cross-unit coordination and faster resource reallocation. Top management, strategy units, regional operations units and human capital divisions should establish cross-functional response teams supported by regular coordination forums, escalation procedures and decision dashboards. These mechanisms can help organisations monitor customer demand, digital logistics trends, service complaints and operational bottlenecks more effectively. Managers can monitor progress through shorter decision cycles, faster approval of service improvement initiatives, reduced coordination delays, improved delivery reliability and faster complaint resolution. Secondly, strategic agility should be translated into BMI rather than remaining limited to operational adjustment. Business development units, digital transformation teams, operations divisions and commercial units should jointly redesign value propositions, service delivery systems, customer interfaces and revenue mechanisms. In state-owned logistics enterprises, this may include developing digital tracking services, improving last-mile delivery models, strengthening e-commerce logistics partnerships, introducing customer-oriented service packages and redesigning pricing or cost structures for specific customer segments. Progress can be assessed through the number of new digital services launched, digital platform adoption, customer satisfaction, delivery timeliness, service reliability, e-commerce-related revenue growth and operational productivity. Thirdly, absorptive capacity should be strengthened through structured knowledge-sharing and learning systems. Human capital divisions, knowledge management units, digital transformation teams and regional branches should develop cross-branch learning forums, customer insight repositories, post-project reviews, innovation workshops and pilot projects with technology partners. These mechanisms can help transform knowledge from customers, regulators, logistics partners, technology providers and frontline employees into service and business model improvements. Managers can monitor progress by tracking the number of customer insights converted into service improvements, the frequency of knowledge-sharing activities, employee participation in innovation programmes, the number of pilot projects implemented and the proportion of successful pilots scaled across branches. Finally, because absorptive capacity has a significant but relatively small moderating effect, managers should support learning capability by providing complementary organisational conditions. State-owned enterprise leaders and governance bodies should strengthen leadership commitment, digital infrastructure, resource availability, regulatory flexibility and managerial empowerment. Practical actions may include simplifying approval procedures for innovation pilots, allocating dedicated budgets for digital experimentation and giving regional units limited autonomy to test customer-oriented logistics solutions. Practical success should be assessed not only through financial outcomes but also through service reliability, delivery speed, customer responsiveness, digital service adoption and scalable business model renewal.</p>
</sec>
<sec id="s20027">
<title>Limitations and future research</title>
<p>Although this study provides important insights into the relationships among strategic agility, BMI, absorptive capacity and FP, several limitations should be acknowledged. Firstly, this study employed a cross-sectional research design, which limits the ability to capture the dynamic evolution of these capabilities over time. As strategic agility, BMI and absorptive capacity may develop gradually across different stages of organisational transformation, future research should use longitudinal or panel data to examine how these capabilities interact and evolve over time. Such designs would also provide stronger evidence regarding the temporal ordering of the relationships examined in this study. Secondly, the study relied on self-reported survey data collected from managerial employees. Although managers are appropriate respondents because they possess relevant knowledge of strategic decisions, innovation activities and organisational performance, the use of a single-source survey may still raise concerns about common method bias and perceptual bias. This study applied procedural and statistical remedies to reduce this concern, but common method bias cannot be fully ruled out. Beyond common method bias, the cross-sectional design also raises concerns about reverse causality and endogeneity. The direction of association may operate in both ways, as firms with stronger prior performance may subsequently invest more in agility, business model renewal or absorptive capacity development, and unmeasured variables such as digital maturity, leadership cognition, governance quality or environmental turbulence may jointly shape both adaptive capabilities and FP. Future studies using longitudinal designs, time-lagged measurement or instrumental-variable approaches would help establish stronger temporal ordering and more rigorously address potential endogeneity. Future studies should consider using multi-source data, such as combining managerial surveys with objective performance indicators, archival data, customer evaluations or supervisor assessments to strengthen the validity of the findings. Thirdly, the study focused on a state-owned logistics enterprise within a single national context. While this context is theoretically relevant because state-owned logistics firms operate amid regulatory complexity, bureaucratic procedures, public service obligations and organisational rigidity, it may limit the generalisability of the findings. Future research could conduct comparative studies across ownership structures (state-owned, private and multinational), industries and countries. Such comparisons would help determine whether the relationships identified in this study are specific to state-owned logistics enterprises or applicable to broader organisational settings. Fourthly, absorptive capacity was examined as a unified moderating construct. However, prior literature distinguishes between potential absorptive capacity, which involves knowledge acquisition and assimilation, and realised absorptive capacity, which involves knowledge transformation and exploitation. Future studies could disaggregate these dimensions to examine whether potential and realised absorptive capacity play different roles in strengthening the relationship between strategic agility and BMI. This would provide a more detailed understanding of which learning processes are most important for converting strategic responsiveness into business model renewal. Finally, this study did not include several organisational and contextual variables that may shape the effectiveness of strategic agility, BMI and absorptive capacity. Future research could incorporate variables such as digital maturity, leadership cognition, organisational culture, governance mechanisms, regulatory flexibility and managerial autonomy. Including these factors would help clarify the boundary conditions under which adaptive capabilities are more likely to support BMI and FP.</p>

<sec id="s0028">
<title>Conclusion</title>
<p>This study examined the relationships among strategic agility, BMI, absorptive capacity and FP in Indonesian state-owned logistics enterprises. Drawing on dynamic capability theory, the study explains when strategic agility becomes more strongly associated with BMI and FP, given institutional and organisational constraints. The findings show that strategic agility is positively associated with FP, and that BMI is positively associated with FP as well. Business model innovation also partially mediates the relationship between strategic agility and FP, indicating that agile responses become more performance relevant when they are translated into renewed value creation, value delivery and value capture mechanisms. In addition, absorptive capacity moderates the relationship between strategic agility and BMI. This suggests that strategic agility alone is not sufficient to support substantive business model renewal; firms also need the ability to acquire, interpret, transform and apply external knowledge so that rapid responses are informed, relevant and aligned with business model transformation. Theoretically, this study contributes to the dynamic capability literature by positioning strategic agility, BMI and absorptive capacity as interconnected mechanisms. Strategic agility provides responsiveness, BMI serves as a reconfiguration and value-conversion mechanism and absorptive capacity functions as a knowledge-processing boundary condition. The study also extends prior research by examining these relationships in state-owned logistics enterprises, where dynamic capabilities operate under bureaucratic procedures, regulatory control, public service obligations and limited managerial autonomy. In practice, the findings suggest that leaders and policymakers should manage strategic agility, BMI, and absorptive capacity as integrated priorities rather than as separate initiatives. Strategic agility should be supported by cross-unit coordination, faster resource reallocation and clearer decision-making routines. Business model innovation should be directed towards concrete renewal in digital services, last-mile delivery models, customer interfaces, logistics partnerships and value capture mechanisms. Absorptive capacity should be strengthened through structured knowledge-sharing systems, cross-branch learning forums, customer insight repositories, innovation workshops and pilot projects with technology partners. In conclusion, strategic agility matters most when it is supported by business model renewal and knowledge-processing capability. In state-owned logistics enterprises, adaptive responses do not automatically lead to stronger performance. They become more meaningful when organisations can transform responsiveness into coherent BMI and apply external knowledge within institutional constraints. Future research should extend this study using longitudinal, multi-source and comparative designs to examine the temporal and contextual dynamics of strategic agility, BMI, absorptive capacity and FP.</p>
